My Take on the matter of Crop Formations...
I live in an area that is famous for crop circles and I can't help but love seeing them appear in the fields over the summer months. Summer is on it's way when crop circles start appearing, and harvest time is here when they are all wiped out, like chalk from a blackboard. Harvest time is a sad time for anyone involved in making crop formations. It's as though party time is over and Monday morning has arrived. Back to the drawing board. It's a hard life for anyone that is involved in the creation of crop formations; as each year passes their creations become more and more intricate, and still, they do not get (public) credit for their work. Why? because for one it is illegal on account that it is considered as vandalism to the farmers field. Secondly because most people that show an interest are only interested in hearing that a spaceship landed in the field or that the formation was created by the so called Earth's energies and so on. They want to believe that they are a sign for all of mankind. Maybe they are, if you consider Telematics.
Many people who seek out crop formations do not want them to be 'man made' and despite it being quite clearly the case, some people refuse to believe it or they accuse the artists of creating fakes and hence, alas, the artists have become an enemy to the very people who study their creations.
So the artists come out at night, with their planks of wood and ropes, trying not to be seen and they try to make sure that they peg it before dawn. Like raves - it all happened in the fields at night. Like raves - people gather and share stories. Many of the makers are old time ravers. Sometimes the formations are just too big to make in one night and need a few nights of all involved being out in the open air - stomping about on their planks of wood. Like children with their hands in the sweets jar when no-one is looking.
As the years have gone by, the artists have grown in numbers and become much better at the art; the most recent designs have shown this. Not only have the artists improved in skill but their determination to tear the brains of any crop formation hunter has too been fed and watered, and has grown massively over the years. In turn the minds of both the creators and the hunters have explored all kinds of possibilities and as a result have hugely expanded the crop formation portfolio.
What I have come to realise is that most of what we consider to be 'man made' may not actually be purely 'man made'. Something did indeed posses man to create it. As they old saying goes - 'whatever possessed you to do that'. Which can apply to just about any action that a human being carries out. This means that yes people make crop circles but while doing so where perhaps being spiritually guided.
Or Telematics if you prefer...
The project clearly demonstrated that a coherent and original work could be created by a distributed group of participants in cyberspace...
My Experience...
The first time I went looking for a crop circle was when I was 17 years old (20 years ago) and had just got a 50cc moped. I just thought why not its not that far away. I'd heard that the whole area had been cornered off by NASA who had now left and I had heard that the farmer was letting people into the field to see the formation. I wasn't overly impressed by it to be honest, I was hoping for some kind of proof that aliens had landed and the wasn't any. The fact that it is not something you see every day and the ride out to see it were the best things about the trip, for me.
Going into a field to see a crop circle close up is an amazing thing to do and has grown on me over the years. If you do it then make sure you stick to the farmers tractor track and don't get too lost when trying to find it. It is kind of exciting to walk along the tractor tracks and see people walking in front of you and behind you, all heading towards an area of flattened crop. It re minds me of days when I used to go to outdoor parties (some would say raves) in fields. Cars pulled up on grass verges and off road, all over the place. People sitting on the ground in a trance like state, often with all sorts of unusual spiritual necklaces and gadgets. Even though you can't make out what the design looks like from the ground, you can still appreciate the fact that they are a work of art. It's the helicopters and planes though that really add to the buzz, as they circle around above the formations. Often with paying passengers all eager to get a decent photo of the latest formation, so that they or others can write pages upon pages of twaddle about it - So I don't have to. :o). I counted at least six planes in the sky one day when eating my lunch al fresco style. They looked like a load of seagulls about to home in on someone's bag of chips at the seaside. Crop formations as with just about everything have come to be largely about money now. Often used in advertising or promotions. There are hundreds of books and websites etc, all with different theories. Which I find really quite sad, and what is even more sad is the fact that it is not the artists that are cashing in. Very rarely does a croppy make any money from what they help to create. Another thing that I have noticed which is a real shame is that nobody wants to talk to the artist to find out what was going through their mind when they created the design or the formation. Let alone to find out if they feel that there is more to their work than creating a stir. In fact nobody I have come across that really studies crop formations wants to talk to the artists at all. The artists are their enemies that are just out to fool them, instead of being people to be admired.
All that said, there are some formations that even some 'croppies' cannot explain. Normally because they personally did not make the formation and they do not know of anyone that did; and sometimes because of their unusual location or the unusual time of day that they were created. There are so many little groups of people making crop circles that no one really knows any more I guess but personally I think most if not all of them are made by real artists.
The painting of a crop circle (above) is my interpretation of a formation that appeared in broad daylight next to Stonehenge several years ago now. The weird thing is that a police helicopter had been circling the area and filming at the same time. It flew past the field and there was nothing to be seen, and the ten minuets later as it came back round there was a formation. The footage from the police helicopter was shown on national television but it has yet to be explained. I find it interesting that the helicopter was circling the area at the time, and that these formations are linked to vortexes. I also find it interesting how helicopters are quick to the scene of a formation. Why? The military must know that people make them. There does seem to be a lot of hype regarding crop formations and aliens, UFO. Why is that when the truth of it is... that formations are mostly (if not all) made by people.
I think that maybe the answer possibly lies somewhere in Telematic Art rather than UFOs.

A Scientific Viewpoint
"It is the scientific viewpoint of the Circles Effect Research Organisation (CERES) that crop circles which are more complicated than simple round ones are either hoaxes (deliberate pranks) or 'experimental hoax-like creations' for whatever purpose (e.g. advertising, film-making). The teams of circle makers (lightworkers) who produce the complex designs become ever more experienced at executing arrays of circles which are sometimes planned at length over winter. On some occasions farmers have colluded with the circle makers to facilitate their efforts. Reported cases of complex crop circles as having appeared 'in a matter of minutes' are spurious --- and are the result of the field having been inadequately observed previously."
"It was the celebrated physicist Professor Stephen Hawking of Cambridge University who declared in 1991 that "Corn circles are either hoaxes or formed by vortex movement of air". Cambridgeshire Evening News, 30. 9.1991"
This one is a bit potty but I like the way they are considering the possibility that crop formations are portals though, nice....

1) Apparently crop formations are the main cause of crop failure in the E.U. (-buy that one? Me neither). (Pollen is poorly preserved in the chalky soils)

2) Crop circles of Wiltshire are mostly on top of chalk or sand, and the underlying geology and water content is also appearing to be relevant to the positioning of the formations. (Crop formations also tend to be on ley lines).
